Here’s a great follow-up to our study on the Fear of the Lord.
As we learned, fearing God is the beginning of wisdom, and before that it’s even the beginning of knowledge, in the sense that our view of God and ultimate reality serves as the foundation for our worldview, and all our thoughts and deeds flow from that. All of this is a bit esoteric though, and if all we’re told is that we need to fear the Lord, by beginning with Him, knowing Him and trusting Him, we may be left with a feeling of helplessness, because we all know that faith does not grow through sheer power of will, we’ve all tried it. How do we get to Jonathan Edwards’ “inner sweet sense Christ,” how do we experience the transforming power and presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives? As Tim Keller finished the sermon, he said the key is “Understanding the Grace of God.” In other words, the secret to a God-glorifying, Spirit empowered life is understanding the Gospel, the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Let’s flesh this out a bit more. In the sermon below, Keller applies the Grace narrative to the question of how we can experience joy in the midst of suffering and injustice: through truth and tears.
